Look to the Classics

If ever you find yourself lost in the often hectic and dense world of fashion, turn to the classics. Consider the dinner jacket, the tailcoat, or a pair of well-polished Oxfords. Classic elegance simply works, thanks to its historic foundation. Some items have been stylish for the past century and will likely remain so for another hundred years. The tie bar, which replaced the historic cravat pin in the early 20th century, is now a staple in a man's wardrobe. It's an investment in male style and personal expression, and every man should own one.

Positioning, Design, and Size

When it comes to tie clips, neatness is essential. There are few things worse than a slender tie paired with a large, hefty tie bar. Keep the tie bar neat if the tie isn’t broad. If the tie is broad, you have more flexibility, though we personally prefer the slimmer ones for their discreet elegance. Also, ensure the positioning of your tie clip is precise. Many examples exist where a tie clip sits either too high or too low, neither of which is ideal. Aim to place the tie clip between the third and fourth button, just below your chest. It should be positioned horizontally across your tie.

How to Use It

Before fastening the tie clip, pull the tie upwards to blouse it slightly, adding depth and visual appeal. Then, secure the tie clip to ensure your tie stays in place. Avoid bright colours like red or turquoise, as they are too eye-catching and detract attention from the tie itself. We favour tie bars in monochrome colours like silver or gold, which are visually appealing yet neutral. They should be a discreet, luxurious accessory rather than something ostentatious. Whether you prefer silver or gold is up to you, but ensure the rest of your metals match in tone.

Bear in mind that traditionally, a tie clip shouldn't be worn with a waistcoat or cardigan, as it defeats the purpose of the tie clip. A waistcoat or cardigan is a fine garment, but wearing one makes the tie clip redundant since the tie is already held in place. Lastly, we’d like to emphasise the importance of using the tie bar as it was designed: attached to both the shirt and the tie. It's often better to use items as intended. We hope you now feel more confident in wearing a tie clip.
